TRACKBARN ORIGIN STORY

As a company, Track Barn came to be in 2019. However, the inspiration for the sport’s only black-owned company came long before then. Founder and CEO, Carl McCargo hails from Vista, California. Born in 1989, Carl and his family moved to the city of Murrieta in 2002. In 2007, Carl began his track and field journey at Murrieta Valley High School under his former coach Matt Farmer after giving up his passion, baseball.

What attracted Carl to track and field was the culture of the sport, something he has definitely contributed to in his company dealings today. After finishing his high school career, Carl competed at Riverside Community College under coach Jim McCarron and later transferred to The University of Central Missouri under coach Kip Janvrin. There, he earned both All-Conference and All-American honors in the decathlon and javelin all after suffering from a knee injury.

After graduating in 2013, Carl began his coaching career by securing a Graduate Assistant position at Eastern New Mexico University under coach Mike Barbee. After one season, Carl transitioned to Chadron State College in Nebraska, where he would coach the multi-event athletes and pole vaulters in 2014. In the Fall of that same year, Carl would then land at Marietta College in Ohio, where he would coach until the Spring of 2016.

Post-graduation, Carl wanted to challenge himself by becoming part of a track and field manufacturing company and, in addition to coaching, secured a second job with VS Athletics to get into sales and supplement his coaching income. McCargo then moved to Texas full-time after becoming their regional sales manager. He began working with them in 2013 and departed in 2019 after taking a job at ESSX, a company of similar dealings. During this time, Carl was responsible for engineering the partnership between ESSX and Richey, a widely known track and field equipment company. In 2019, and not without some adversity, Carl decided he wanted to embark on making his own impact on the culture of sport and used his connections to start Track Barn. After much success, McCargo left ESSX to manage Track Barn full time and hasn’t looked back since.

In its infancy, Track Barn was originally created to customize uniforms for the less fortunate youth. The idea was to embody a “look good, feel good” mentality when it came to the customized uniforms that is still very much alive today. The digital side of business had humble beginnings as well, with only an Instagram profile and a self managed website. As time went on, so did the expansion of the company on multiple fronts with the help of nonstop in-person networking. In Fall of 2020, Carl hired long-time friend, Josh Colley as head of content and design after receiving a direct message from him on the company’s Instagram profile. Josh quickly became TrackBarn’s COO after collaborating on a number of projects together. Carlton Broman, another long time friend of Carl, was brought on as the company’s CFO in January 2021.

TrackBarn also continues to grow its social media presence with daily posts and engagement with its followers. Track Barn continues to grow every day. From sponsoring athletes of almost all levels, to bringing outside eyes to the sport, this company is one of the leading track and field companies in the United States with one of the largest equipment selections on the market. There is so much more to come, join the wave before it’s too late!
